Monday Night Football- Lions vs Bears Preview

leave a comment »

Jay Cutler

After some fantastic play and dramatic action in yesterday’s games, Week 7 concludes tonight with a crucial NFC North clash between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears.

The game will be live on ESPN in America and on the BBC Red Button in Ireland.

So without further ado, here is a full preview of Monday Night Football Week 6.

Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears

Matthew Stafford

Stadium– Soldier Field

Kick Off-  7:30 p.m. in Chicago/1:30 a.m. in Ireland

What to Watch

Julius Peppers

Matthew Stafford and Lions Passing Game

  • The Lions are coming off a dramatic overtime win against the Philadelphia Eagles last week and a major reason for that win was the 311 passing yards that Matthews Stafford put up through the air. Of course, it does help when you’ve got the best wide receiver in football in Calvin Johnson to throw to.
  • The Bears defense is geared towards stopping the run and they tend to struggle defending the pass. Look for the Lions to take advantage of this tonight with another big passing performance.

Bears Defensive Line vs Lions Offensive Line

  • The defensive line have been huge for the Bears defense with 17 of their 18 sacks coming from d-linemen. This group has great depth with plenty of players capable of getting after the quarterback.
  • However, it’s big name pass rusher Julius Peppers who needs to improve his production with just 2.5 to his name sacks thus far. The Lions offensive line have done a solid job of protecting quarterback Matthew Stafford this year and they will hope to continue that against the Bears tonight.

Bears Wide Receivers vs Lions Cornerbacks

  • It’s safe to say that Lions starting starting cornerbacks Bill Bentley and Chris Houston aren’t the greatest tandem of corners the league has ever seen. Add that to a defense that is ranked dead even as the 16th best team vs the pass and the Bears offense knows what area to look to exploit.
  • Brandon Marshall is having a productive campaign but the Bears aren’t getting much production from their other wideouts. Players like Alshon Jeffrey and Earl Bennett need to step up and contribute tonight.

Who to Watch

Ndamukong Suh

Calvin Johnson- Wide Receiver- Lions

  • This is the scary thing about Calvin Johnson: Every game the Lions play, opposing defensive coordinators will spend most of the weeks practice coming up with a gameplan to stop him. And yet he continues to put up consistently productive performances and continues to look almost unstoppable at times.
  • Johnson, or as he has become more commonly known as “Megatron” is on pace to post career-highs in receiving yards and catches. Bears cornerback Charles Tillman is in for a long night trying to cover #81.

Ndamukong Suh- Defensive Tackle- Lions

  • Just as the old saying in the NFL goes: the tape never never lies. When you turn on the tape, analysts and fans alike are left wondering why Ndamukong Suh is yet to find the form he once showed during his impressive rookie year.
  • Given the physical attributes he has, Suh has been drastically underperforming considering his huge potential. It will be interesting to see how he performs in front of a primetime audience tonight.

Julius Peppers- Defensive End- Bears

  • Julius Peppers has seen a decline in his production since signing a big deal with the Bears similar to what has happened with Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson. He is yet to put up the type of numbers he would have hoped for this year and also hasn’t recorded a sack since Week 3.
  • Peppers will likely be moved around up front but the Lions must take notice of where he is lined up on the field at all times. Otherwise, he may bounce back with a big pass rushing performance.

Calvin Johnson

This game should be a close one between two evenly matched division rivals and I see it going down to the wire.

If this is the case and the game comes down to one final 4th quarter drive in the closing minutes, I’m picking the Lions to come out on top.

Lions 28 Bears 27

So that’s your preview and prediction, hope everyone enjoys the game.
